Who makes your jeans?
CHINA
BLUE (12A)
Dir: Micha Peled USA, 2005, 93 mins, Col
China Blue, the latest film to win the Amnesty International Award, is
a hard-hitting and touching film which shines a light on the inhumane
working conditions endured by denim manufacturers in Southern China. The
Western buyers bargain with the factory owner for impossibly low costs
and absurdly tight deadlines for their designer jeans. They either don’t
realise, or don’t care, that a factory which paid minimum wage and
allowed its workers sufficient rest would price itself out of competition.
Micha Peled’s film brings a very human face to the effects of globalisation,
centring on Jasmine, a 16-year-old, who leaves her family to go and live
and work in the factory. She and her determined friends endure the hardships
as best they can, dreaming of better things to come, or even one day,
of simply being able to visit their families again.
