In Search of Mozart
Dir: Phil Grabsky
UK, 2005, 128 mins, Col, PG
A documentary that travels to the heart of old Europe and the heart of genius itself, to answer the question, who was Mozart?
It takes a director of Phil Grabsky's compassion and sensitivity to
produce a perspective on Mozart spanning a vast cast of historians, musicians,
family, curators and directors that gives full expression to both music
and composer.
This is a story we can all relate to - a man struggling for expression,
recognition, money to keep a roof over his head, pursued by a demanding
father, falling in love, rejected, grieving the loss of his mother and
child, achieving success, and finding that success brings its own problems.
Mozart the tiny dandy, the impecunious entrepreneur is always driven
to create ever more vibrant, mischievous, rule-breaking works of musical
art. Sufficient time is given to the music to make this a real treat for
the serious aficionado, and the sheer drama of Mozart's life as (mis)represented
in Forman's Amadeus, retains the narrative interest for the general audience.
Narrated by Juliet Stevenson, with Sam West as the voice of Mozart.
Soundtrack by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
